How to open a pipe airway Part 2 of 3

April 17th, 2010 by pacapao

Part two showing how I opened up my Don Carlos pipes’ airway. In this video I carefully sand the airway. I have been asked in the first video why I don’t just heat and bend the stem, and do it that way. The people who asked this question have much more confidence in my skill and have grossly over estimated my talents. LOL

The Day Pa Recognized Me For a Man

April 16th, 2010 by pacapao

As long as I could remember, he’d had that horse! I turned twenty six last week and I guess that would make Old Blue ’bout 32, Pop said he was ready for first grade the year I was born so, 32 it had to be! I think somehow I resented Pop thinking of Old Blue as a big brother to me, when I was knee high to a grasshopper, Pop’d put me up on Blue’s back and tell him to care for me right proper and off we would ride.

Shucks, many was the time me and Old Blue would ride in after dark and Ma’d have already put supper in the ice box, for we cleared the ranch yard. Pa didn’t take too kindly to our coming in after dark, o’course. Thinking on that one, I recall a whippin I took for Blue, we’d been down by the creek side and Blue didn’t want to go home, he just sort of hung round the old swing tree and stamped a foot now and again.

Me, of course, I was raring to go home, a’for dark, not wanting to upset Pa and all. But that durned old horse was so stubborn, I looked him directly in the eye and said, “Now Blue, see here, it’s time you stand on your own two feet and head on back to the house, where everyone gets to tell you what you can and can’t do! I reckon as to how, since he had four feet ’stead of two, he just didn’t take to be bossed anymore!

So, there we was, dragging in after dark again, sure ‘nough, there was Pa with the razor strap, just a sittin’ there as stubborn as old Blue had been down by the creek! Me, I sorta smiled at Pa and said, “Evening Sir,” Pa, he just sorta chuckled and hung the strap up on the nail beside the door and lit up his pipe and even offered it to me! Why, I was so shocked, I just said, “No thank you Sir, I have a paper.”

Now everyone knows you didn’t address your Pa with rolled smokes before you was twenty five, but I guess my Pa was way ahead of me, ‘cuz he just smiled slightly, asked for the papers and tobacco and commenced to roll smokes, one after another, till he had quite a stack laying on the barrel head. I was feeling pretty smart, seeing as to how I knew you didn’t roll up a bunch more than you was of a mind to smokin’ at any one time, here old Pa was just a workin’ away at rolling. I must say, he appeared to know what he was doin, for those smokes was rolled and tamped tight enough to make it hard to keep ‘em lit.

You might wonder how I knowed it was hard to keep ‘em lit, well you see, Pa, he had him an idea that since I figured I was old enough to smoke tobacco, he was going to see how severely bad I wanted to smoke. So, when he was done rolling the rest of the can of Bull Durham I had pulled from my hiding spot in the hay, he just says, “Light ‘er up, Son.”

I thought we had reached a milestone in our relationship just then, till, just as soon as I finished one cigarette, Pa had me light up again, then keep on repeating that lighting, till every cigarette was burned up and I was as green as a tree fresh lime!

Looking back now, I think that was the last time me and Old Blue came in after dark, and as a matter of fact, neither Old Blue, nor me has come anywhere near a can o’ Bull Durham since.

The French town of Bergerac, situated on the northern bank of the Dordogne River, in the west of the region, is a highlight to any visit to the country. With its medieval architecture, historical sights and many shops and cafes Bergerac is sure to have something to offer everyone.

The town has a modern centre with designer shops, a vibrant nightlife, great restaurants and one of the largest and most colourful markets of the region. In contrast, the old town is full of history and French culture and it is here that tourists are drawn each year.

The old town is a must-see and with its winding streets, ancient buildings and numerous squares to look around it is no surprise that the area is so popular. Among the many things to do in Bergerac, when you have tired of browsing the shops and cafes and admiring the medieval buildings, is to sample the area’s wines.

There are 13 wine appellations in the town and the Maisons des Vins de Bergerac is a great way to begin sampling.

A good place to start exploring the town is the main square Place Pelissiere, it contains one of the town’s two statues of Cyrano de Bergerac – the famous character – and also houses St Jacques church. Most of the famous church was destroyed during the Wars of Religion, but the original bell tower and balcony still exist. The square, especially the area near the fountain, is a great place to relax and with its many cafes and restaurants, visitors are spoilt for choice.

A walk along the Rue St James offers holidaymakers the chance to enjoy the medieval architecture while browsing the little gift and craft shops.

The road has a fantastic 14th century house and at number 26 there are some impressive sculptures.

Another must-see is the National Tobacco Museum with its collection of pipes and smoking equipment. The museum is housed in one of the town’s most famous buildings and it is a popular sight for tourists.

While visiting Bergerac, the Dordogne River is a great place to take a stroll and a wander along the riverside will give visitors a good view of the town.

Loosen Up and Write it Down – Determining the Causes of Heartburn

April 12th, 2010 by pacapao

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What are the causes of heartburn? Heartburn happens when gastric acids come up from the stomach into the esophagus. The acids are supposed to remain in the stomach. The lower esophageal sphincter is the valve that is there to do the job. But, sometimes this valve gets damaged or weakened. This allows the gastric acids to back up into the food pipe. When you are looking at the causes of heartburn, you are really looking at why this valve is not working properly. Sometimes the best way to determine what is actually causing your own heartburn is to keep a diary. Note down when it happened and what you had just done. An example would be eating lunch and listing the foods that you ate. Control is easier when you know the causes of heartburn.

Some of the leading causes of heartburn are those that cause an increased pressure in the stomach. This pressure pushes upward on the esophageal valve, forcing it to open. One of the most common causes of severe heartburn is eating large portions of gas-producing and fatty foods that digest slowly. Going to sleep with a full stomach can also be a factor. When people wear tight clothes around the torso such as belts or slimming undergarments, heartburn can occur. Pregnancy can also be one of the causes of heartburn due to the pressure on internal organs from the increased uterine size. Even eating a very large meal can put too much pressure in the stomach. It is one of the common causes of heartburn.

Other causes of severe heartburn are those that loosen the muscles of the valve. This makes it weak and unable to close completely. Smoking and chewing tobacco can cause the valve to respond poorly. Alcohol consumption in large quantities also causes the muscles at the top of the stomach to malfunction. Some foods can also loosen the muscles around the valve. Medical causes of a loose valve can include hiatal hernia and peptic ulcers. Both of these are causes of heartburn.

Finally, some other leading causes of heartburn are those that increase the production of acids in the stomach. Tomatoes, citrus, and other acidic foods are often the causes of heartburn. Spicy or deep-fried foods can be a cause as well. Carbonated beverages, such as colas, can up the ante on acid production. Caffeine in coffee and tea can upset the balance as well. In a high stress environment, stress is one of the causes of heartburn. Some types of medication can also increase acid production. There are other medical reasons for an over active acid stomach.

Three Acid Reflux Diet Myths

April 11th, 2010 by pacapao

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Many people believe that adopting a good acid reflux diet will solve all their heartburn problems.

Although conventional wisdom says that eating the wrong food is the major cause of acid reflux if you examine the facts, a different picture starts to emerge.

The stomach is a marvelously engineered chemical factory capable of digesting most foods without any problem.

In fact, our stomach acid is so strong, it is able to break down many solids… including bone, razor blades and even glass!

A major study, published in May, 2006 in the Archives of Internal Medicine debunked a few acid reflux diet myths. Stanford University carried out the study – headed by Lauren Gerson, MD – and the following facts emerged:

Myth #1 Drink Milk

  • An old wives tale says that drinking a glass of milk before bedtime will prevent nighttime acid reflux.
  • However, the lactic acid in milk has a rebound effect.
  • Although the lactic acid present in fermented foods, such as yogurt is good for the digestion, the raw lactic acid from milk forces the proton pump to secrete extra hydrochloric acid as a neutralizer.
  • The end result is often an induced nighttime acid reflux attack because the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) tends to relax during sleep, thus allowing the extra acid to seep sideways into the food pipe.

Myth #2 Avoid coffee, spicy food, tomatoes, citrus fruits and citrus beverages.

  • The study proved that we can safely consume all of the above without inducing any acid reflux symptoms.

Myth #3 Avoid fatty foods.

  • Conventional thinking suggest that a good acid reflux diet must exclude fatty foods because they are harder to digest.
  • However, the Stanford’s research, which has been backed up by a number of independent studies, debunks this theory; they all indicate that neither a low fat nor a high fat meal is responsible for inducing heartburn symptoms.

You should still avoid saturated animal fats however, and if you are overweight, cutting down on all fats is advisable.

Trigger Foods

Despite Stanford University’s encouraging news, many of us are sensitive to certain foods.

In order to adopt an effective acid reflux diet, we must first identify our own particular heartburn triggers.

Through observation and research, many of the common triggers have already been identified. However, it’s impossible to generalize when it comes to pinning down your own private food sensitivities.

Everyone is different.

The old saying, “One man’s meat is another man’s poison” holds true.

Even though you may be aware of a few of your own particular triggers, it would be wise to carry out some research.

Keep a journal and list all the foods that are a part of your regular diet.

Whenever heartburn strikes, highlight your last meal and all its ingredients. By applying a process of elimination, you’ll soon get a handle on which foods to avoid.

With regard to unfamiliar foods, pay particular attention when eating out… you’re sure to come up with one or two surprises.

This may take some time, but it’s well worth the effort when developing a custom acid reflux diet… and by the way, don’t ignore the beverages.

Acid Reflux Triggers to Avoid

Eliminate or cut down on the following… They are proven acid reflux triggers:

  • Alcohol — All alcohol, whether it’s wine beer or spirits, has a relaxing effect on the lower esophageal sphincter. If you enjoy a glass of wine with your dinner, experiment until you identify your level of tolerance.
  • Nicotine — Stop using tobacco in all its forms, including snuff. Nicotine weakens the LES.
  • Chocolate — Relaxes the LES.
  • Peppermint, Spearmint and Mint Tea — Proton pump produces extra acid.
  • Carbonated drinks — Soda, beer and sparkling wine. Drinking any of these fizzy beverages forces you to swallow carbon dioxide bubbles. This in turn induces burping, which allows corrosive digestive fluids to erupt upwards into the esophagus.
  • Diet drinks containing artificial sweeteners — The sweetening chemical, Aspartame is a definite no-no. Use honey instead, or at the very least, lay in a supply of unrefined brown sugar.
  • Whole Milk including creamed foods or soups — Proton pump produces extra acid to counteract lactic acid from some dairy products.

Recommended foods

  1. Fruit: No limitations.
  2. Vegetables: No limitations (Garlic, cooked onions and sauerkraut are particularly good for you).
  3. Meat: Few limitations (avoid hot dogs and high fat meats).
  4. Dairy: Yogurt, two percent low fat milk, Cheddar cheese, low fat cottage cheese.
  5. Grains: No limitations (Garlic bread, muffins and Granola cereal are good).
  6. Beverages: Non-alcoholic beer (low fizz), non-carbonated fruit juices, tea, coffee, Root beer.
  7. Sweets/deserts: Everything that does not contain regular milk products, chocolate or artificial sweeteners.

Conclusion

Doctor Gerson said that for the most part, medication alone is adequate to treat the symptoms of heartburn.

“The main reason they probably have heartburn is that their sphincter muscle is relaxing too much and taking medicine will decrease the amount of acid that’s going into their esophagus.” (Read the “Science Daily” article on Dr. Gersons study here.)

Apart from avoiding your own acid reflux food triggers, dietary considerations are of secondary importance.

Relax! Go ahead and drink coffee, have that refreshing glass of orange juice with your breakfast.

It’s not going to kill you!
